West Haven is a
city in New Haven County, Connecticut,
United States. The population was 52,360 at
the 2000 census. It is home to the
University of New Haven. Settled in 1648
West Haven (also known as West Farms) was
first a part of New Haven and then part of
Orange (incorperated as a town in 1822. In
1921 West Haven gained independance from
Orange. In 1779 the British attacked New
Haven Harbor and came ashore in West Haven.
The Honorable John Picard has served as
mayor since December 2005.
West Haven has the distinction of having
more bars per square foot than any other
city in the country, and is home to the
infamous "Campbell Crawl," in which revelers
must try to drink a beer and a shot at every
bar (at least 15) on West Haven's Campbell
Avenue.
