It is the principal city of the Burlington, North Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area which encompasses all of Alamance County. The city of Burlington was incorporated and a charter was issued by the State Legislature on February 14, 1893. The population was 44,917 at the 2000 census. The town hosts the Burlington Royals baseball club of the Appalachian League.
